QUANTUM CHEMISTRY Quantum chemistry is a branch of chemistry whose primary focus is the application of quantum mechanics in physical models and experiments of chemical systems. It is also called molecular quantum mechanics, Wikipedia . But let’s break it down a little bit. The first word is quantum Quantum is the Latin word for amount . This could mean amount of energy or amount of a substance or a given measurable quantity in the field of science. Take for instance when we say a dozen- it means 12, a score means 20. The next word is mechanics Mechanics is the science of a body’s movement when they have been subject to a of force. In this case the it is the part of science that studies of electrons surrounding the nucleus of the atom. PHYSICS - MOTION Motion in physics refers to movement of object from one point to another. The study of motion enable us to understand how fast a body is moving and describe other characteristic attributed to its motion. When a body moves from point A to point B, we say the body has undergone motion. Types of Motion There are four types of motion. Linear motion - this refer to movement of a body from one point to another on a straight line. Random motion- This type of motion is such that the direction of movement of object is constantly changing with time. An example of this type of motion is the movement of smoke within a room. Circular motion - it refers to motion of a body along a circular path for instance the earth rotating around the earth. UNITS AND MEASUREMENT Physics is a science subject that measures science activities. Like all science it interprets science from law(philosophy) into mathematical relationships. The mathematical relationships of nature is measured using quantities. Types of quantities are fundamental and derived quantities. A unit is a standard used in measuring quantities. For instance length is a fundamental quantity but length can be measured in meters. FUNDAMENTAL QUANTITIES Fundamental quantities are those quantities that cannot be derived from other quantities. Fundamental quantities are the building blocks of all other quantities in physics. Fundamental quantities(at this level) includes mass, length, and time.
